Avocado, also called alligator pear, is a fruit native to the Western Hemisphere from Mexico south to the Andean regions. It is commonly used as a vegetable despite the fact that it is a fruit. Avocado fruits have greenish or yellowish flesh with a buttery consistency and a rich, nutty flavour. Like the banana, the avocado is a climacteric fruit, which matures on the tree, but ripens off the tree. The flesh should be virtually fibreless and of agreeable flavour and, for the dieter, of low oil content. They are often eaten in salad, milkshake, ice cream, soup, cake, toast, Japanese rolls, sandwiches and desserts. Apart from being consumed as fresh fruits, their oil is also used as cooking oil and used in cosmetic industry. Avocado is highly nutritious and unique amongst fruits in that it contains mono-unsaturated fat type of oil.

Thai avocado
In Thailand, West Indian varieties of avocado plants were initially introduced and cultivated by missionaries in northern Thailand in the early 20th century. They have been grown for more than 90 years and not actually yet recognised to the world. The purpose of introducing avocado cultivars into Thailand at that time was to evaluate their suitability under local conditions. Due to their high nutritive value and wide utilisation possibilities, avocado fruits are becoming more and more popular with local consumers to date. Although the temperature and humidity are relatively high comparing to those of central and southern American climates, all grown avocado trees adapt themselves well without toleration of differences.
At present, there are seven avocado cultivars found planted in 9 provinces covering north, north-east, east and south of Thailand. Avocados used in commerce are picked hard and green and kept in coolers at 3.3 to 5.6 °C until they reach their final destination. Thai avocado is creamy and nutritious. Not only it is a demand in domestic market but also a potential for exporting to some countries like Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.
