Coconut is actually a palm, not a tree as people commonly thought. The term ‘coconut’ refers to the entire palm, the seed or the fruit (not a biological fruit, but a drupe). The origin of coconut is still a subject of debate. Based on the latest theories and findings, it is said to be existed for Indo-Pacific origin. There are two natural sub-groups, simply referred to as “tall” and “dwarf” cultivars. The three most important forms of consumption for coconuts are fresh (including drinking), coconut oil and desiccated coconut. Coconut is versatile. It’s husk is used for making fuel, mulch, coir and peat. The shell is used for making charcoal, handicraft and activated carbon and the oil is of special interest because it possesses healing properties far beyond that of any other dietary oil. Only recently has modern medical science unlocked the secrets to coconut’s amazing healing powers.
Thai coconut As demand for coconut products continues to grow worldwide, Thailand struggles to keep up. Coconut is an agricultural commodity that Thailand has the potential for production and contribution to its economy. Thailand is the sixth largest coconut producing country in the world and the fifth largest exporter of coconut shell charcoal and activated carbon. The three main export coconut products are kernels, husks, shells and nuts. It has high yield per hectare in copra and nut terms. Thai coconuts are just like other tropical fruit trees which are poor in cold weather and drought toleration. Young coconuts have been popular as “Welcome Drink” and also a mixer for exotic tropical cocktails among luxury hotels and resorts in many countries. EU, especially Germany and Netherlands, is now importing more Thai coconuts, thanks to a rising demand due to the fruit’s health benefits.
