Durian is regarded as the ‘King of Fruits’. They are native to South-east Asia. Durian is famously known for its distinctive and pungent odour. Enthusiasts describe this as fragrant, but for those who have never encountered are disgusted by the overpowering smell. In fact, durian is rare in the New World and almost impossible to cultivate. This is because durian, unlike many other fruit trees, demands specific climate environment. There are 30 recognised species, of which 9 of them produce edible fruit. The fresh of durian is pale yellow to red. Durian production is seasonal, with most crops being ready sometime in May to July. Outside harvesting period, the price of durian rises dramatically, and at these times it is the most costly local fruit.

Thai durian
Although durian is not native to Thailand, the country is now renowned for producing quality durians. Commonly found processed durians in Thailand are preserved durians (cakes), baked or fried chips and durian desserts. There are hundreds of cultivars of durians in Thailand, famously grown in the eastern part of the country. Thai durians are the most popular with international buyers for their creamy feel, mild sweet taste and pungent smell. The quality of a Thai durian is usually selected by the thickness of the flesh and the size of its seeds. Today, Thailand is the largest producer and exporter of all durians thanks to their unique aroma, acquired taste and increased production.
