Noni fruit or Indian mulberry is known for its medicinal properties. It is native to South-east Asia and Australasia and is cultivated extensively in Polynesia, India, the Caribbean, Central and northern South America. Year-round, the tree yields a small fruit, which is cream-coloured and about the size of a small potato. The noni fruit is noted for its bitter taste, unpleasant smell, and reportedly strong healing properties. Scientifically, the fruit is claimed to prevent and cure several diseases. It is primarily used, to stimulate the immune system and thus to fight bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal infections; as well as preventing the formation and proliferation of tumours, including malignant (cancer) ones. As a result of this reputation, consumption of this fruit is currently high especially in those developed countries. The noni fruit is most commonly combined with other fruits (such as grape) to make juice and sometime pure juice.
Thai noni fruit
In Thailand, noni fruits are grown both in the wild and cultivar. Four species are now grown. All parts of the plant such as the roots, bark, trunk, leaves and fruits have been used both in traditional and modern medicine for the treatment of a number of conditions and illnesses. It is also used in cosmetic products. Recently in Thailand, noni juice extract has been commercially processed and distributed internationally as a dietary supplement.
